Identities & Systems

These chapters were very interesting the whole "identity concept" got me thinking about how each country, state, city, or town identifies with a certain characteristic(s). For example, the people of Beverly Hills, its common around their area that EVERYONE has cosmetic surgery to have somewhat of an identity. Ranging from fixing a bump in your nose to completely pulling up your face, i.e Joan Rivers. Overall, as an individual its all  about your choice and who you choose to indentify with. Cultural influences can impact the true thinking of a design. I was surprised to read how Gillette didnt ever change across the market and it has remained the same and how successful it is. Systems, is the process of defining the architecture, components, modules, interfaces, and data for a system to satisfy specified requirements One could see it as the application of systems theory to product development. There is some overlap with the disciplines of systems analysis, systems architecture and systems engineering. I thought it was interesting to see how Hong Kong is being diverse culturally by having not only the spoken language on signs but also the English translation. Hesket ends this chapter by stating that"design, in a sense, is part of the problem. It is a subsystem within wider economic and social systems and does not function independently of these contexts."
